Samenvatting

Patiënten kunnen een rol spelen bij het verbeteren van zorgverlening. Hiervoor bestaan verschillende benaderingen, die kunnen worden geordend naar de fasen van de gang door de zorg. In de fase voorafgaand aan contact met zorgverlening kan informatie mensen sturen in hun hulpzoekgedrag en zelfmanagement. Direct voor, tijdens en direct na het contact kunnen bepaalde activiteiten en hulpmiddelen de rol van de patiënt versterken. Voorbeeld zijn keuzehulpen (decision aids) en programma’s voor het versterken van zelfmanagement. Meting van patiëntervaringen na contact met de zorgverlening kan als educatieve feedback aan zorgverleners worden gegeven. Tot slot kunnen patiënten (vertegenwoordigers) worden betrokken bij de planning en het bestuur van zorginstellingen.
