Samenvatting

Het kaakgewricht kent, evenals andere synoviale gewrichten, vele aandoeningen en verouderingsverschijnselen. In dit hoofdstuk zullen een aantal pathologieën aan de orde komen, die een artrogene temporomandibulaire disfunctie kunnen veroorzaken. Tot deze afwijkingen behoren de degeneratieve gewrichtsaandoening osteoartrose, gewrichtsontstekingen, aandoeningen van traumatische aard, adhesies en ankylose, ontwikkelingsstoornissen en neoplasmata. Voorafgaand aan de bespreking van deze afwijkingen wordt stil gestaan bij een tweetal pathofysiologische processen in het kaakgewricht, de zogenoemde progressieve en regressieve remodelling.
