17. Palliatieve zorg en pijn in een oudere populatie

Samenvatting

De complexiteit van chronische aandoeningen bij de ouder wordende populatie leidt tot veranderende symptomatologie en behoeften aan het levenseinde. De symptomen zijn vaak niet alleen het gevolg van fysieke, maar ook van psychische en spirituele behoeften. Symptoomcontrole begint met een optimale beoordeling van symptomen aan de hand van hulpmiddelen, die zijn aangepast aan de cognitieve en communicatieve vaardigheden van de persoon. Een van de belangrijkste symptomen gedurende het gehele palliatieve traject van de oudere is ‘pijn’. Richtlijnen ontwikkeld door panels van deskundigen van nationale verenigingen kunnen behulpzaam zijn bij het optimaliseren van de behandeling. Het begeleiden van de oudere in de palliatieve fase is een taak voor elke zorgverlener en vereist naast een uitstekende kennis van de geriatrische en palliatieve zorg, een dosis empathie en goede communicatieve vaardigheden.
