12. Palliatieve zorg bij mensen met een dementie

Samenvatting

Palliatieve zorg is een benadering die de kwaliteit van leven verbetert van patiënten en hun naasten die te maken hebben met een levensbedreigende aandoening, door het voorkomen en verlichten van lijden, door middel van vroegtijdige signalering en zorgvuldige beoordeling en behandeling van pijn en andere problemen van lichamelijke, psychosociale en spirituele aard. Palliatieve zorg bij mensen met een dementie kent een aantal specifieke aspecten waarmee rekening moet worden gehouden. Recent is onder auspiciën van de European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) een ‘white paper’ gepubliceerd met 57 aanbevelingen. In dit hoofdstuk wordt ingegaan op een aantal belangrijke aspecten van de palliatieve zorg bij mensen met een dementie, te weten het anticiperend beleid, belangrijke symptomen zoals het delirium, problemen met eten en drinken, pijn en pneumonie. Het hoofdstuk gaat ook in op ethisch gevoelige thema’s als palliatieve sedatie en euthanasie. Tot slot is een paragraaf over organisatie van zorg en consultatie opgenomen
