Samenvatting

De paden naar EPA zijn veelzijdig door ieders unieke levensomgeving en biologische constitutie. Het beloop van het pad naar EPA kan veranderd worden door in een vroeg stadium belemmerende klachten aan te pakken, daarbij zowel oog houdend voor de predictoren van een slecht beloop die uit onderzoek naar voren komen, als voor de subjectieve ervaring. Hierbij is het van belang de mogelijkheid open te houden dat de klachten niet altijd een teken zijn van de vroege fase van een ziekte. Psychiatrische klachten kunnen aangeven dat een jongere vervreemd is geraakt van zijn of haar waarden, zoals misselijkheid aangeeft dat je iets verkeerds hebt gegeten. In de vroege fase van psychopathologie is ‘normaliseren waar mogelijk en interveniëren waar nodig’ een goed devies. Initiatieven die dit als uitgangspunt nemen met een gepersonaliseerde benadering, kunnen hopelijk bijdragen aan het uit de ggz houden van zo veel mogelijk jongeren met beginnende psychiatrische klachten, terwijl jongeren die een grotere kans hebben zich op een pad naar EPA te bevinden, tijdig adequate hulp kunnen krijgen.
