Overmatig zoutgebruik – meer dan bloeddruk alleen

Samenvatting

In Nederland eet ruim 85 % van de bevolking te veel zout. Dit verhoogt het risico op hart- en vaatziekten en nieraandoeningen, vooral bij overgewicht. Recent onderzoek laat zien dat zout ook subcutaan kan worden opgeslagen, met mogelijk een rol in het ontstaan van hypertensie. Zoutbeperking is essentieel voor behandeling van hypertensie en chronische nierschade; de werking van RAAS-remmers verdwijnt bij hoog zoutgebruik. Het risico op te lage zoutinname is verwaarloosbaar en reflecteert mogelijk een slechte voedingsstatus. Feedback van de zoutinname kan de begeleiding verbeteren, evenals het betrekken van de naaste omgeving. Zoutbeperking hoort in een algeheel gezond voedingspatroon en betrokkenheid van een diëtist is aan te bevelen.
