3. Overgewicht en obesitas bij volwassenen en kinderen

Samenvatting

In Nederland heeft 15 % van de volwassenen de ziekte obesitas en heeft de helft van de volwassenen overgewicht. Van de kinderen heeft 3 % obesitas en heeft 13 % overgewicht. De fysieke en psychosociale gevolgen kunnen ernstig zijn. Obesitas is vaak het gevolg van een complexe interactie tussen biologie en omgeving. Bij de aanpak op individueel niveau volstaat een advies om gezonder te eten en meer te bewegen daarom veelal niet. Het is belangrijk rekening te houden met de factoren die het overgewicht hebben veroorzaakt en in stand houden, zoals sociaal-economische en sociaal-culturele omstandigheden, chronische stress, medicatie met gewichtsverhogende werking, hormonale factoren en soms een onderliggende ziekte. Deze vraaggestuurde aanpak op maat vergt samenwerking tussen de zorg en het sociaal domein. Het doel is vermindering van de mate van overgewicht door eerst diagnostiek te verrichten naar de oorzaken en vervolgens via duurzame verbetering van de leefstijl, en zo nodig aanvullende obesitasbehandelingen, gezondheidswinst en betere kwaliteit van leven te bereiken.
