Osteomyelitisbehandeling door middel van bioglas

Samenvatting

Osteomyelitis is een ernstige complicatie die kan optreden na electieve of acute chirurgie aan het bot. Adequate nettoyage en antibioticatherapie zijn dan noodzakelijk. Tot op heden is de gouden standaardbehandeling een tweestapsaanpak met intermittent gebruik van gentamycinegeladen kralen, die een hoge lokale antibioticavrijzetting geven. Recente ontwikkelingen hebben geleid tot een aantal nieuwe biomaterialen, zoals bioglas, die het mogelijk maken om het probleem in één stap aan te pakken. De expertise met deze nieuwe groep biomaterialen neemt met rasse schreden toe en de resultaten zijn zeer bemoedigend. Mogelijk kan daardoor de eenstapsaanpak in de nabije toekomst de gouden standaard worden. Dit artikel tracht inzicht te geven in de ontwikkeling, het werkingsmechanisme en de indicaties van het fascinerende biomateriaal, bioactief glas.
