1 Prevalentie van decubitus

Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk wordt de prevalentie van decubitus beschreven. Allereerst wordt ingegaan op de wijze waarop de prevalentie gemeten kan worden, en met welke factoren in het bijzonder rekening gehouden moet worden: de meetmethode, het meetinstrument en de populatie. Daarna volgt een beschrijving van de prevalenties zoals deze gevonden zijn in Duitsland en Nederland. Decubitus blijkt veel voor te komen, in Nederland nog meer dan in Duitsland, in het bijzonder in de Nederlandse verpleeghuizen. Decubituswonden graad 1 en 2 komen het vaakst voor en de meeste wonden bestaan korter dan drie maanden. Een relatief groot aantal blijkt echter al langer dan een jaar te bestaan. De meeste wonden ontwikkelen zich op de stuit of de hiel, terwijl ze voornamelijk in de eigen instelling zijn ontstaan. De kosten van de preventie en behandeling zijn hoog. Geschat wordt dat 1% van het totale budget voor de gezondheidszorg aan preventie en behandeling van decubitus wordt besteed. De veronderstelling is dat bij adequate preventie de kosten zullen dalen, maar met hoeveel is onduidelijk.
