5. Ontwikkeling van relaties met ouders en vrienden en empathie

Samenvatting

In de loop van de adolescentie veranderen de relaties van adolescenten met hun ouders en vrienden. De relatie met de ouders wordt gelijkwaardiger. Conflicten met ouders komen het meest voor in de middenadolescentie en nemen daarna weer af. In de late adolescentie zijn de meeste ouder-adolescentrelaties positief. Ook neemt het vermogen van ouders om hun kinderen te controleren af en bouwen adolescenten meer en meer hun eigen wereld. Dat doen ze ook doordat ze zelf gaan bepalen welke persoonlijke informatie ze wel en niet delen met ouders. Relaties met vrienden worden warmer, en adolescenten leren ook om conflicten met vrienden op een redelijke manier op te lossen. Machtsverschillen en conflicten met vrienden blijven tot in de late adolescentie bestaan. Gemiddeld genomen is er dus maturatie van relaties met ouders en vrienden. Cognitieve empathie, het vermogen om anderen te begrijpen, neemt toe in de adolescentie, terwijl de toename van affectieve empathie minder eenduidig is. Positieve relaties met ouders en vrienden gaan samen met minder probleemgedrag bij adolescenten.
