Ontwikkeling en psychopathologie: een klinisch-ontwikkelingspsychologische benadering

De klinische ontwikkelingspsychologie bestudeert kinderen bij wie psychische problemen zijn vastgesteld. Men stelt zich daarbij de vraag hoe deze problemen zich manifesteren en welke factoren de problemen veroorzaken en in stand houden. De studie van de afwijking van de normale ontwikkeling staat hierbij centraal, wat aansluit bij de onderzoekstraditie van de ontwikkelingspsychopathologie (OPP). Het doel hierbij is meervoudig: een model ontwerpen dat de ontwikkeling van afwijkend gedrag kan beschrijven én verklaren. Maar de klinische ontwikkelingspsychologie gaat verder en bekijkt de klinische implicaties van de verworven inzichten en of er aanknopingspunten zijn voor wetenschappelijk onderbouwde preventie of gepaste interventie.
In dit eerste hoofdstuk wordt een up-to-date overzicht gegeven van de belangrijkste concepten en modellen – waaronder de recente transactionele modellen, de onderzoeksmethoden, voorbeelden van risicofactoren en veerkracht bij kinderen – en illustreren we wat de ontwikkelingspsychopathologie betekent voor de diagnostiek en de preventie.
