Abstract

Obesitas is een veelvoorkomende risicofactor voor een aantal ziekten. Een Body Mass Index van 30 kg/m2 of meer wordt geassocieerd met het optreden van hart- en vaatziekten, diabetes mellitus, verschillende vormen van maligniteit en een aantal andere aandoeningen. Gewichtsverlies verbetert het risicoprofiel. Behalve de totale hoeveelheid vet die in het lichaam aanwezig is, is ook de vetverdeling van belang voor de geassocieerde risico’s. Vooral overmatige vetopslag in de abdominale compartimenten is slecht voor de gezondheid. Een middelomtrek van meer dan 88 cm bij vrouwen en meer dan 102 cm bij mannen is sterk geassocieerd met ziekte. Obesitas is een multifactorieel bepaalde aandoening. Genetische aanleg, voedingscondities in de baarmoeder en direct na de geboorte, en omgevingsfactoren spelen een pathogenetische rol. Verandering van eetgedrag en lichamelijke activiteit vormen de hoekste-nen van de behandeling. De verandering van eetgedrag kan gedragstherapeutisch, medicamenteus of chirurgisch worden ondersteund.
