Samenvatting

Normale veroudering kan worden beschreven als een tijdafhankelijk biologisch proces dat, hoewel het niet een ziekte op zichzelf betreft, functionele achteruitgang en risico op ziekte en dood met zich meebrengt. Eén manier om de kans op sterven te meten, is door te kijken naar sterftecijfers. Lichamelijke factoren die gecorreleerd zijn met de maximale levensverwachting zijn bijvoorbeeld de relatieve grootte van de hersenen, de metabolische activiteit, de grootte, het gewicht, de lichaamstemperatuur en de snelheid waarmee energie wordt gebruikt. In dit hoofdstuk worden verder theorieën over het normale verouderingsproces beschreven.
