Nieuwe klemtonen in de cliëntgericht-experiëntiële visie op de gewetensfunctie en de innerlijke criticus

Abstract

Dit artikel is een aanvulling op het eerder verschenen artikel van Stinckens en Lietaer (2001) over de visie van Carl Rogers op de gewetensfunctie en de innerlijke criticus. Recente cliëntgericht-experiëntiële theorieën die iets bijdragen tot deze thematiek worden onder de aandacht gebracht. Bepaalde axioma's, die ten grondslag liggen aan Rogers' persoonlijkheidstheorie, worden hierbij geherformuleerd. Zo wordt de sociale dimensie expliciet verdisconteerd in de omschrijving van het begrip ‘psychische gezondheid’. Gezond functioneren betekent een juist evenwicht realiseren tussen de krachten van de actualisatietendens enerzijds en de sociale beïnvloeding anderzijds. Daarnaast wordt het ‘zelf’ beschouwd als een dynamisch systeem waarin verschillende krachten in een voortdurend dialectisch spanningsveld met elkaar interageren. Deze nieuwe klemtonen werpen een ander licht op de conceptualisering van de gewetensfunctie en de destructieve uitloper ervan, de innerlijke criticus. Ze zorgen tevens voor een betere afbakening van de problematiek van de innerlijke criticus en ze verschaffen meer inzicht in de disfunctionele mechanismen waarmee de criticus de gezonde gewetensfunctie verstoort.
