Neutrophils are key in human innate immunity against invasive bacterial and fungal disease. We identified a patient which was suffering from an invasive Candida infection in the brain due to an extremely raredisease: i.e. a so-called CARD9-deficiency.The defect was associated not only with defects in the generation of inflammatory Th17 cells and proinflammatory cytokine production by myeloid cells, but also by a highly selective defect in the killing of Candida albicans by neutrophils. This prompted us to further investigate the pathways responsible for the killing of fungi by the major white blood cell. …
