Neurobiologie van vitaliteit: de rol van sociaal-economische status

Samenvatting

Mensen met een relatief lage sociaal-economische status (SES) hebben gemiddeld een slechtere gezondheid en lagere levensverwachting dan mensen met een hoge SES. Dikwijls wordt hierbij gewezen op een ongezonde levensstijl. Gewoonten zoals roken, overmatig alcoholgebruik, (te veel) ongezond eten, gecombineerd met te weinig lichaamsbeweging, zijn inderdaad aantoonbare risicofactoren voor het ontstaan van gezondheidsproblemen en deze factoren worden vaak in verband gebracht met verminderde algehele vitaliteit bij een lage SES. Bij een lage SES kan echter ook een gepercipieerde sociale ondergeschiktheid een rol spelen in de gezondheid. Daarnaast zijn keuzen met betrekking tot gezond gedrag niet altijd rationele keuzen. Psychosociale stress zou een onderliggende kernfactor kunnen zijn bij het ontstaan van sociaal-economische gezondheidsverschillen. Deze stress kan op de lange termijn gedragsmatige, metabole en fysiologische aanpassingen veroorzaken, wat uiteindelijk het risico op het ontstaan van (multi)morbiditeit en mortaliteit verhoogt. Integraal beleid is noodzakelijk om gezondheid van mensen met een lage SES te verbeteren.
