Abstract

Plasticiteit wil zeggen dat de eigenschappen van neurale structuren kunnen veranderen, onder andere door omgevingsprikkels en leerprocessen. Deze plasticiteit heeft haar biologisch substraat op vele neurale niveaus: moleculen, receptoren, synapsen, netwerken, neurale representaties en zelfs de macroscopische anatomie. Plasticiteit beperkt zich niet alleen tot de hersenen; we vinden haar overal, dus ook in spieren, zenuwuiteinden, ruggenmerg en in ieder functioneel systeem (motoriek, zien, voelen, horen). Onder invloed van muziektraining ontstaan plastische veranderingen in alle betrokken neurale systemen: het akoestische, het somatosensorische en het motorische systeem.
