Chronic constipation and incontinence are frequent and serious underrated complaints in paediatric practice. They have a negative influence on both the somatic and psychosocial development of children. In this article we present a multidisciplinary treatment, carried out by a child psychologist and paediatric physiotherapist in co-operation with a paediatrician and/or paediatric surgeon. After a review of the aetiology and maintenance of these complaints from the biopsychosocial model, the multidisciplinary Nijmegen treatment protocol is described. This treatment is suitable for children with and without congenital bowel anomaly, individually or in a group, from 2 years of age and older.
