Motiverende gespreksvoering in psychotherapie

Samenvatting

De afstemmingsfase in psychotherapie is bedoeld om een vertrouwensrelatie op te bouwen, overeenstemming te krijgen over de doelen en de cliënt te stimuleren tot verandering. Weerstand speelt in deze fase bij uitstek een rol, en de therapeut moet daar adequaat mee omgaan. Motiverende gespreksvoering is een methodiek die daartoe systematisch cliëntgerichte en gedragsgerichte elementen combineert, door het ontlokken en verkennen van iemands redenen om te veranderen, in een sfeer van acceptatie en compassie. Het bestaat uit de methodische stappen van engageren, focussen, ontlokken en plannen en daarbij passende strategieën. De bouwstenen van motiverende gespreksvoering zijn ontwikkeld in een model dat is getoetst. Uitvoerig onderzoek in tal van settings en bij tal van psychische stoornissen heeft de doeltreffendheid aangetoond, zij het dat er veel onverklaarde variatie is. Training in motiverende gespreksvoering is goed ontwikkeld. Verspreiding van de methode kan bijdragen aan een adequate inzet van de ‘algemene’ factor in psychotherapie.
