Minimale interventie door verpleegkundigen helpt ouderen met stemmingsproblemen

Veel chronisch zieken kampen met stemmingsproblemen, zoals depressie, die negatieve gevolgen hebben voor het beloop van hun aandoening. In de eerste lijn echter blijven stemmingsproblemen – áls ze al herkend worden – vaak onbehandeld. Hier zou de inzet van een verpleegkundige vruchten kunnen afwerpen.
Wij onderzochten het effect van een minimale psychologische interventie, uitgevoerd door een verpleegkundige, bij oudere patiënten met diabetes mellitus type 2 en/of COPD. De interventie bleek een positief effect te hebben op symptomen van angst en depressie, kwaliteit van leven, self-efficacy, algemeen functioneren, sociale participatie en ook het HbA1c. Verpleegkundigen bleken prima in staat dergelijke interventies uit te voeren, en de interventie was niet duurder dan de gebruikelijke zorg.
Deze uitkomsten hebben ertoe geleid dat een aantal huisartsenpraktijken in Oostelijk Zuid-Limburg binnenkort een zorginnovatie zullen implementeren waarbij een praktijkondersteuner signaleert welke chronisch zieken problemen hebben met het dagelijks functioneren en hen zo nodig ondersteunt
