8. Mindfulness, pijn en gezondheid

Samenvatting

Mindfulness heeft gunstige effecten op pijn en op de stressreactiviteit – twee belangrijke factoren die vaak gelijktijdig bij patiënten binnen de fysiotherapie aanwezig zijn. De pijnintensiteit kan door mindfulnesstraining minder worden, maar vooral het lijden onder de pijn en de impact van pijn op het functioneren van de patiënt neemt af. Deze gunstige effecten van mindfulnesstraining op pijn zijn meer dan alleen placebo. Het effect van mindfulness op pijn verloopt via diverse routes, waaronder het vrijkomen van endogene opioïden, ademhaling, bewegen en acceptatie. Chronische pijn tast het brein van de patiënt aan in regionen die betrokken zijn bij pijn en zelfregulatie. Mindfulnesstraining bevordert juist het functioneren van die regionen. Andere fysiotherapeutisch relevante effecten van mindfulnesstraining bij patiënten zijn: minder kans op somberheid bij een chronische aandoening, beter gezondheidsgedrag, minder sterke ontstekingsrespons en beter omgaan met onbegrepen klachten.
