Mindful of Race: Transforming Racism from the Inside Out provides information on how to use mindfulness as a coping tool to successfully bridge the gap of the head and the heart. The author, Ruth King, identifies the prevalence of racism in both society and the individual, and explains how mindfulness can facilitate the understanding both social justice and personal awareness of bias. King, is both a scholar and a teacher. Having authored several books centered on mindfulness and clinical psychology, she continues to contribute literature to the field of psychology. Likewise, King is an active teacher in the mindfulness community, operating the Mindful Members Insight Meditation Community in Charlotte, NC. With this firm foundation, King seeks to build off her work in mindfulness by combining it with her experience in diversity training. In Mindful of Race, King provides different experiences and perspective in how and why to develop a mindfulness practice for awareness of racial bias. Writing with the inclusion of definitions, defense, and provision of mindful practice “how-to’s” allows the book to be rooted in both theory and practice. …
