18. Minderheidsstress bij mensen met een homoseksuele voorkeur

Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk staat het seksueleminderheidsstressmodel centraal en wordt het voorgesteld als verklaring voor de vaststelling dat homoseksuele personen meer psychische problemen ervaren dan niet homoseksuele personen. Het seksueleminderheidsstressmodel verklaart de hogere prevalentie van psychische problemen bij homoseksuele personen als een gevolg van vier factoren: (1) daadwerkelijke acute en chronische gebeurtenissen en omstandigheden; (2) verwachtingen van dergelijke gebeurtenissen en de waakzaamheid die dat vereist; (3) het verbergen van de eigen seksuele voorkeur; en (4) het zich eigen hebben gemaakt van negatieve sociale opvattingen en houdingen. Nederlands en Vlaams onderzoek bevestigt de validiteit van het seksueleminderheidsstressmodel. De implicaties van dit model voor hulpverlening en preventie worden geschetst. Daarnaast is er ook kort aandacht voor een alternatief model ter verklaring van de hogere prevalentie van psychische problemen bij homoseksuele personen.
