Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is een heterogeen ziektebeeld dat geriaters en neurologen de laatste jaren geregeld diagnosticeren en waarnaar men veel onderzoek doet. MCI betreft een lichte cognitieve achteruitgang die erger is dan men op basis van leeftijd mag verwachten, maar die niet aan de diagnose dementie voldoet. Men stelt de diagnose op basis van anamnese en heteroanamnese, bij voorkeur aangevuld met een objectieve test om de cognitieve status in kaart te brengen. MCI is een belangrijke risicofactor voor het ontwikkelen van dementie; jaarlijks krijgt 5-15% van de patiënten met MCI dementie. Er zijn geen therapeutische opties voor MCI. Wel is het belangrijk eventuele somatische factoren te behandelen. Vooralsnog lijkt het vooral voor de huisarts belangrijk om de achtergrond van een gediagnosticeerde MCI of aangegeven lichte cognitieve problemen te kennen, en patiënten en hun naasten te begeleiden. Het stellen van de diagnose MCI door de huisarts zelf lijkt hierbij geen meerwaarde te hebben.
