Neurobiologische factoren en antisociaal gedrag: Nurture, Nature, Narture

Als ik tegenwoordig bij colleges vraag aan studenten, of het nu bij geneeskunde, criminologie of psychologie is: ‘Wie kent de naam Buikhuisen?’, dan blijft het meestal angstvallig stil. Vaak heb ik voorafgaande daaraan al gevraagd wie van de studenten denkt dat antisociaal gedrag bij kinderen vooral een kwestie van nature óf nurture is. Er gaan dan bij beide opties wat weifelende vingers de lucht in en er is altijd wel een student die enigszins verveeld, voor mijn gevoel namens de gehele groep, aangeeft dat het natuurlijk niet het één óf het ander is maar simpelweg een samenspel van beiden, duhuh. Kortom, voor de twintiger van nu is de heftige discussie over de rol van neurobiologische factoren bij het ontstaan van criminaliteit die in de jaren zeventig begon, maar óók het latere monomane geloof in de alles verklarende neurobiologie van de jaren negentig, al lang passé. Toch worden ook met hen de discussies spannend en urgent wanneer we vervolgens gaan praten over wat de implicaties zijn van het accepteren dat zowel omgeving áls biologische factoren in samenspel de ontwikkeling van antisociaal gedrag verklaren. Wat zijn dan de zaken waar we ons als onderzoekers, behandelaren en beleidsmakers op moeten richten? Nog interessanter wordt het als we bespreken of omgeving en biologie eigenlijk nog wel te onderscheiden zijn van elkaar; hebben we naast nurture en nature niet een derde woord nodig dat de daadwerkelijke samensmelting van die twee belichaamt: narture? …
