16. Middelgerelateerde en verslavingsstoornissen

Samenvatting

Middelgerelateerde en verslavingsstoornissen zijn nauw verweven met verstoringen van het slaappatroon; zo zijn slaapproblemen op jongere leeftijd duidelijk voorspellend voor het ontwikkelen van een latere verslaving – en vice versa. Bovendien zijn slaapproblemen na het bereiken van abstinentie een belangrijke risicofactor voor terugval in gebruik. Wat de relatie tussen middelgerelateerde en verslavingsstoornissen en slaap extra complex maakt ten opzichte van comorbiditeit met overige psychiatrische aandoeningen, zijn de directe effecten van het gebruik van diverse middelen op de slaap, ontregeling van de slaap door het staken van middelengebruik, het aspect van zelfmedicatie en de ongunstige leefstijlpatronen. In de behandeling van patiënten met middelgerelateerde en verslavingsstoornissen is het belangrijk om al deze aspecten in overweging te nemen om zodoende de individuele diagnostiek en behandeling van slaapproblemen bij deze patiëntengroep te optimaliseren.
