Samenvatting

Pasgeborenen en jonge, nog niet of onvoldoende gevaccineerde zuigelingen vormen de belangrijkste risicogroep voor het krijgen van een ernstige kinkhoestinfectie. Vaccineren van zwangere vrouwen is een effectieve manier om deze groep te beschermen tegen kinkhoest. Zwangere vrouwen maken beschermende antistoffen aan die zij via de placenta aan hun kind doorgeven. Op deze manier zijn zuigelingen de eerste levensmaanden beschermd tegen (een ernstig verloop van) kinkhoest.
Eind 2015 heeft de Gezondheidsraad het advies uitgebracht om kinkhoestvaccinatie tijdens de zwangerschap aan te bieden via een nationaal programma. De minister van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport (VWS) is voornemens dit advies over te nemen, mits het uitvoerbaar en betaalbaar blijkt te zijn. Zij zal hierover binnenkort een definitief besluit nemen.
