4 Lymfoedeem

Samenvatting

Lymfoedeem is een veelvoorkomende aandoening die gedefinieerd wordt als zwelling van een gedeelte van het lichaam veroorzaakt door accumulatie van interstitieel vocht in het suprafasciale compartiment, als gevolg van insufficiëntie van het lymfesysteem. Lymfoedeem kan zich geleidelijk ontwikkelen en uiteindelijk leiden tot onherstelbare schade, zoals verharding in het bindweefsel en hyperkeratose van de huid. Klachten van lymfoedeem nemen in de loop van het leven toe door het van nature progressieve karakter van de ziekte. Onbehandeld kan lymfoedeem op den duur aanleiding geven tot ernstige en invaliderende complicaties.
