What is self-compassion? Why do teens need to acquire and practice self-compassion? What and how are teachers to teach self-compassion to teens? What characteristics should teachers possess to teach self-compassion? Answers to these and related questions can be found in the book Teaching Self-Compassion to Teens by Lorraine Hobbs and Niina Tamura. The authors have extensive educational, clinical, and research experience in child and adolescent development. Self-compassion has been defined in terms of self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness. When one is self-compassionate, he/she is realistic of their challenges or failures instead of being overly critical, know that these situations are universal amongst all sentient beings, and being aware of their failings without wallowing in them or avoiding them.
