Children’s competency to consent: a framework for practice

Gill Brook Clinical Nurse Specialist, Liver Unit, Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Trust

In the first of two articles, Gill Brook introduces a framework of practice designed to help children to make choices in their treatment and care with their parents

Involving children in decision making on their treatment is one of the greatest challenges in paediatric practice. As rapid technological advances are being made in treatment there is never a more important time to uphold the rights of children to have information on their disease and treatment and to be provided with the opportunity to make choices in their care and management.
