We report a rare case of the tarsal tunnel syndrome caused by the compression of the plantar branches of the tibial nerve, with traumatic contracture of the abductor hallucis.
The case was a 18-year-old male student. Two years ago, one morning after a field d track practice, the patient noticed a swelling in the medial aspect of the left foot and experienced pain when walking. The patient visited a surgeon who made a incision at the medial aspect of the middle part of the foot and removed the hematoma. About 6 months later, an induration in the medial aspect of the left foot appeared, and the walking pain exacerbated gradually. He visited our department in May 1998. He had a flexion-varus contracture of the left first toe and a hypesthesia in the medial plantar nerve distribution when standing. A conservative treatment was done. About 3 months later, he was capable of active dorsal flexion of the first toe, however, persistent pain, hypesthesia, and varus deformity of the first toe when standing were recorded. Surgical investigation was consequcntly selected on January 28 1999. The varus deformity of the first toe and hypesthesia in the planter aspect disappeared promptly after the operation
