ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the ecological perspective and associated research that has examined the perception-action processes that underpin sport anticipation and decision making. It begins by providing an overview of the ecological approach with an emphasis on some of the theoretical foundations that motivated research in the sport psychology literature. The chapter focuses on how an ecological perception-action framework can inform research, with a primary focus on the topic of anticipation. It considers how an affordance-based approach can help to develop understanding in the study of expertise, with final consideration of the implications for the study of decision making. The chapter summarises the main implications of researchers' approach and highlights future research directions. It discusses the implications of a perception-action approach through consideration of an ecological dynamics approach to decision making. An important consideration that stems to understand the factors that influence spatio-temporal control and whether there are particular adaptations that are associated with high-skilled performers.
