Abstract
Caring like knowing is a human activity that is intrinsically interesting, and also like knowing it is an activity whose understanding is central to the understanding of man. But unlike knowing, it has been the subject of very little philosophical reflection.1 In this paper, I point out some characteristics of caring in a way that, I hope, will suggest it as a worthy area for further inquiry. My purpose is not to try to provide a meaning of “care” that will link all usages of the word together; it is to attempt to make an important way of living a little more intelligible.
