ABSTRACT

Objective

To conduct behavioral genetic analyses of self-reported childhood anxiety at 7 years of age.

Method

Three hundred twenty-six same-sex twin pairs (174 monozygotic, 152 dizygotic) completed the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale at 7 years of age. Behavioral genetic analyses were conducted on the total and subscale scores.

Results

Monozygotic within-pair correlations were higher than dizygotic correlations for physiological and social anxiety symptoms, suggesting heritable influences on these aspects. These results were found to be statistically significant with structural equation modeling.

Conclusion

Certain symptoms of self-reported anxiety in children 7 years of age seem to result, at least in part, from genetic factors. Physiological and social anxiety symptoms, which may be related to behavioral inhibition, appear to be genetically influenced. These results are linked to previous findings in older children and adults.

Furthermore, the VAS is appropriate for children who have the cognition development to comprehensive space, numbers, and distance (Beyer and Ardine, 1988). In contrast to these instruments, the RCMAS is brevity, simple yes/no response format, suitable for age between 6 and 19, and contains three subscales (Brehm et al., 2003; Pina et al., 2009; Warren et al., 1999). The psychometric properties and construct validity of the RCMAS has been examined across cultures and ethnicities such as Zimbabweans (Wilson et al., 1990), Spaniards (Richmond et al., 1988), French-Canadian children (Turgeon and Chartrand, 2003), and Bulgarians (Bidjerano, 2006).

Social fears are quite stable across childhood and adolescence (Kagan & Moss, 1962), even more so than other childhood fears (Achenbach, 1985). Many researchers exploring the childhood origins of social anxiety have focused on the role of biological and genetic factors (e.g., Warren, Schmidt, & Emde, 1999). For example, children are at a greater risk for developing an anxiety disorder if the disorder is present in their parents (e.g., Beidel & Turner, 1997).

The Symptomatology Scales of the BPI provide a child's report of emotional and behavioral symptoms. The MSSB,75–83 which has been used with children as young as 3 years of age, consists of a systematic group of story beginnings, enacted in play with Lego figurines. The child is asked to complete the story by showing “what happens next,” using the Lego toys.
