The influence of social stigma and discriminatory experience on psychological distress and quality of life among rural-to-urban migrants in China
2010, Social Science and MedicineCitation Excerpt :Some may have had overly optimistic expectations or simply uninformed expectation. These findings are partially supported by prior empirical research indicating that unrealistic pre-migration expectations and a discrepancy between expectations and actual experience lead to symptoms of depression (McKelvey & Webb, 1996; Williams & Berry, 1991). Nevertheless, preparation for migration had only an inconsistent relation to expectation-reality discrepancy, but a stronger relation to coping.
