Abstract

Knowledge, attitudes, and coping skills were surveyed in 908 seventh and tenth grade students. The majority of students knew that AIDS was transmitted by sexual rather than casual contact. Correlations between knowledge and behavioral attitudes were minimal, so the impact of increasing knowledge about AIDS would seem unpredictable. A subgroup of least tolerant students (N = 57) could be distinguished from the other students only by differences in coping strategies. J. Am. Acad. Child Adolesc. Psychiatry, 1988, 27, 4:504–508.
