Abstract
School social workers can serve special education students and their families by hosting and facilitating support groups for parents. Through discussion, the parents exchange knowledge and information concerning their special needs children, develop and/or strengthen social relationships with other parents who share a common and difficult responsibility, and empower themselves in regard to their child's IEP and other contacts with school personnel. A description, analysis, and evaluation of a year-long support group project and changes being considered in regard to its continuation are presented.
