Prenatal Counseling, Ultrasound Diagnosis, and the Role of Maternal-Fetal Medicine of the Cleft Lip and Palate Patient
2016, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Some studies have shown that up to 10% of families consider pregnancy termination after they receive their prenatal diagnosis.9 These scenarios have been discussed by medical ethicists for decades and the overwhelming body of evidence suggests that when adequate information is presented to the parents and they are given sufficient emotional support, they are able to see the excellent treatment options available to them and quickly resume their excitement for the upcoming birth.10–12 Once an ultrasonographer discovers the facial cleft, the parents are then directed to the multidisciplinary care team for further action.
Prenatal diagnostic rates and postnatal outcomes of fetal orofacial clefts in a Taiwanese population
2011, International Journal of Gynecology and ObstetricsCitation Excerpt :There is a high incidence of CL/P among American-Indians (3.6 per 1000 births) and Asians (1.5–2.0 per 1000 births), and a low incidence among African-Americans (0.5 per 1000 births) [3]. The reported incidence of facial clefts among live births varies among countries: it is approximately 0.23, 0.46–1, 1.09–1.47, and 1.2 per 1000 live births in Africa, South America, Europe, and China, respectively [9]. Being a tertiary referral center, more than a third of the cases of fetal cleft in the present study (35%, 29/84 fetuses) had been referred to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for prenatal confirmation, genetic or pediatric consultation, neonatal intensive care, and surgical repair.
Prenatal Diagnosis and Treatment of Craniomaxillofacial Anomalies
2010, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Additional imaging later in the pregnancy may be indicated to reassess fetal growth and check for other anomalies. Despite improvements in imaging technology, false-positive results for clefting have been reported using ultrasonography when the umbilical cord is overlying the lip of the fetus.19,20 The antenatal diagnosis of a cleft lip gives parents the chance to gather information regarding the condition (see Figs. 3 and 4).
