Case report
The patient was a woman aged 39 years who had rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed for 3 years. She had severe preauricular muscle pain, tenderness, and stiffness, with repetitive clicking sounds upon mouth opening, closing, and lateral excursion. The TMJ functional index measured 0.54 on a scale of 0 to 1, where healthy individuals score between 0 and 0.1. The TMJ functional index was reassessed after 1 week by the same examiner (without altering the antiarthritic therapy) to ensure intraexaminer
Discussion
The involvement of TMJ in RA has been demonstrated in over 50% of RA patients.5, 6, 12 Clinically there is preauricular pain or sensitivity during joint movement. The joints are tender upon pressure, and there is morning stiffness usually lasting more than 30 minutes and leading to decreased masticatory force. Additional findings, though not as frequent, include decreased joint mobility and occlusal disharmony.5, 6, 12

Crosstalk between Fas and S1P<inf>1</inf> signaling via NF-kB in osteoclasts controls bone destruction in the TMJ due to rheumatoid arthritis
2019, Japanese Dental Science ReviewCitation Excerpt :Clinically, the TMJ is involved in 4–80% of RA cases [36–38]. This wide range is due on the different examinations performed, the different selection of the patient populations and age distribution, the duration of the RA occurs, the different diagnostic criteria for classifying joint involvement, and the imaging techniques used [5,37–43]. However, more than 50% of patients with RA complaints about TMJ discomfort [36,44,45].
