A general increase of stress proteins has been put forward as a possible defense mechanism against ageing-induced tissue damage and, in support of that theory, a significant increase of HSP70 and HSP90 has been reported in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of elder (mean age 75) compared to younger (mean age 36) controls [26]. We observed no general induction of HSP in muscle tissue of patients over 50 compared to younger individuals.
