This is in contrast to some studies suggesting intact intent for social relationships in SCD. The sub-threshold RRBs, i.e. circumscribed interests and repetitive speech, in some of these individuals, was insufficient to meet diagnosis criteria of ASD, but was elevated relative to their typically developing peers (Skuse, 2012). It further begets the question if SCD is an independent disorder, or a manifestation of ASD on a continuum (Brukner-Wertman et al., 2016; Barton et al., 2013).

Also, no reliable quantitative measure of restrictive and repetitive behaviors was available. The finding of an association between ADHD polygenic score and pragmatic language deficits is potentially also relevant to the new DSM-5 category of “social communication disorder” (40). Because the ALSPAC cohort is longitudinal, the sample is affected by attrition.

Some of them will meet criteria for the new social communication disorder. It is uncertain what the difference between ASD and the new social communication disorder is, apart from not including RRBI (Skuse, 2012; Tanguay, 2011). The correlation between the ASSERTsoc and ASSERTrrbi was low (r = 0.23) but identical to other population-based studies (Ronald, Happe, & Plomin, 2005; Ronald et al., 2006), suggesting a low degree of overlap between the two factors.

  • Autism susceptibility genes and the transcriptional landscape of the human brain

    2013, International Review of Neurobiology
    Citation Excerpt :

In an attempt to improve the consistency of ASD diagnosis, the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) proposed significant changes in the ASD diagnostic criteria. The new criteria proposed a single diagnosis of ASD, with several levels of severity, instead of distinct diagnostic entities for autistic disorder, Asperger's syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (Skuse, 2012). The complexities of ASD clinical assessment and diagnostic ascertainment are mirrored by an equally challenging genetic landscape.
