Paternal and/or maternal preconception-induced neurobehavioral teratogenicity in animal and human models
2021, Brain Research BulletinExposure to drugs of abuse induce effects that persist across generations
2021, International Review of NeurobiologyCitation Excerpt :Neurochemical analysis in one study revealed increased activation of Wnt4 and D2/AKT/GSK3 pathways in BPN offspring brains when compared to controls (Zhang et al., 2018). When parental exposure was analyzed separately, PPN-sired offspring showed increased expression of D2 receptor (which was not seen in MPN offspring) leading to modulation of the GSK3 pathway (Zhang et al., 2018). The GSK3 pathway ultimately helps regulate Bdnf expression (Zhang et al., 2018) and appears to be crucial in the epigenetic inheritance of pathological states due to parental nicotine exposure.
Cross-generational THC Exposure Weakly Attenuates Cocaine's Rewarding Effects in Adult Male Offspring
2020, Physiology and BehaviorCitation Excerpt :Such a design has clear limitations, as it is impossible to determine whether the effects detected are matrilineal, patrilineal or both. In prior work, F1-nicotine subjects exhibited a diverse array of deficits in measures of anxiety, locomotor activity and depressive behavior dependent on whether the parental history was maternal, paternal or biparental [58]. Similarly, paternal vs. maternal morphine exposure had opposite effects on morphine reward in progeny [59,60].
Paternal nicotine exposure induces hyperactivity in next-generation via down-regulating the expression of DAT
2020, ToxicologyCitation Excerpt :Our other study found that maternal exposure to nicotine before pregnancy could result in depression in the offspring. While in the biparental nicotine exposure group, most offspring showed depression and a few showed hyperactivity (Zhang et al., 2018). Our previous studies had confirmed that nicotine exposure could affect male fertility (Dai et al., 2016; Nie et al., 2016; Zhu et al., 2013).
Exploring the potential role of sonic hedgehog cell signalling pathway in antidepressant effects of nicotine in chronic unpredictable mild stress rat model
2019, HeliyonCitation Excerpt :Nicotine (NIC) is addictive and the most common drug of abuse either through smoking or by consumption of tobacco containing products. It is highly associated with various diseases and mortality [1]. According to the World Health Organization report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic (2017), smoking related mortality has risen to more than 7 million per year, which is higher than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined [2].
