Coronary artery diseasePrognostic Value of Admission Hemoglobin Levels in ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Patients Presenting With Cardiogenic Shock
Section snippets
Methods and Results
A group of 3,038 patients was treated for STEMI with PCI from October 1997 to March 2005 and was registered in our dedicated database. In total, 292 patients had STEMI complicated by cardiogenic shock on admission. Cardiogenic shock was defined according to the Should We Emergently Revascularize Occluded Coronaries for Cardiogenic Shock (SHOCK) trial.5 Admission Hb data were missing from 27 patients. Therefore, the present analysis includes 265 patients. Follow-up information was obtained 1
Discussion
This study shows that a decreased Hb concentration on admission is an independent predictor for 1-year mortality in patients with cardiogenic shock presenting with STEMI. The prevalence of anemia according to the World Health Organization (Hb level <12 g/dl) in a general population with STEMI is ∼15%.8 In our study, the incidence of cardiogenic shock in patients with anemia (groups I and II) was 30%.
Whether anemia is causally related to an excess risk of death remains unclear. One potential

Anemia in intensive cardiac care unit patients - An underestimated problem
2015, Advances in Medical SciencesCitation Excerpt :The meta-analysis conducted among patients admitted with ACS reported that the risk of CS in anemic patients was significantly increased [12]. Moreover, in STEMI complicated by CS a decreased Hb concentration on admission was an independent predictor for 1-year mortality with the increase in odds for mortality by 17% for every 1.0 g/dL decrease in plasma Hb concentration [19]. But in the group of almost 300 patients with AMI complicated by CS among simple biochemical parameters influencing prognosis only hyperglycemia, but not anemia, was predictive for 1-year mortality [20].
The outcome of intra-aortic balloon pump support in acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock according to the type of revascularization: A comprehensive meta-analysis
2013, American Heart JournalCitation Excerpt :For the analysis, we used the χ2 test (i) within each subgroup, (ii) among the 3 subgroups, and (iii) between subgroup-paired comparisons. Of 890 of the 1,338 studies that met the initial screening criteria, after detailed review, only 17 were selected: 13 Obs15,16,18-23,25,35-39 and 4 RCTs17,24,40,41 that included 14,186 patients. The main characteristics of the selected studies are reported in Table I.

Twenty-seven studies that met our inclusion criteria were included in our systematic review and meta-analysis.7,10-35 The characteristics of the 27 identified studies are shown in Table I, including study design, population, definition of anemia, type of ACS, exclusions, and follow-up timeline and end points.
