Patient and surgical factors that affect the development of velopharyngeal insufficiency
2022, Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic SurgeryCitation Excerpt :A secondary outcome identified in this study was that Furlow and von Langenbeck palatoplasty offer similar amounts of post-operative lengthening; however, von Langenbeck palatoplasty is associated with a higher incidence of VPI. The Furlow palatoplasty is a double opposing Z-plasty that is thought to offer superior muscle exposure and overlap when compared to the von Langenbeck palatoplasty, which may in turn lead to a superior muscle repair and better speech outcomes.13,14 This is a possible explanation for the decreased rate of VPI that was found to be associated with the Furlow palatoplasty in this study.
Comparison of speech outcomes using type 2b intravelar veloplasty or furlow double-opposing Z plasty for soft palate repair of patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate
2021, Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Also, in the literature, many authors advocate the effect of hard palate repair technique and staged palatal repair on speech and surgical results (Pigott et al., 2002; Stein et al., 2019). Non-standardized palatal repair technique is one of the shortcomings of the studies analyzing speech outcomes between Furlow palatoplasty and intravelar veloplasty (Spauwen et al., 1992; McWilliams et al., 1996; Gunther et al., 1998). Comparing distinct surgical techniques, many studies have suggested better speech outcomes in Furlow palatoplasty (Horswell et al., 1993; McWilliams et al., 1996; Williams et al., 2011; Stein et al., 2019).

2019, Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial SurgeryCitation Excerpt :For example, is the prevalence of OME after a specific palatal surgical technique equivalent to the prevalence of OME in children without CP? Second, in the section on OME, 3 of the 5 articles were published more than a decade ago.4,15,16 With ever-advancing medical practices, these results might be too outdated to make any conclusions.
