The relation between self-aspect congruence, personality and subjective well-being

Abstract

The relationship between self-aspect congruence, subjective well-being (SWB), and personality was examined in two studies. In Study 1, the congruence between ‘real’ and ‘ought’ Q-sort self-descriptions was found to be positively related to measures of SWB and life satisfaction. Among the five personality factors of Costa and McCrae (1991), congruence was negatively related to neuroticism and positively related to agreeableness. In study 2, the congruence between ‘real’ and ‘ideal’ Q-sort self-descriptions was found to be positively related to both self- and non-self-report measures of SWB, and was significantly related to four of Costa and McCrae's five personality dimensions. Implications for research in the area of emotion and SWB are discussed.

Considering the difference in sample size between this study and the present study, it may be that the negative results found for extraversion in the present study reflect a question of power. However, several prior studies (Pavot, Fujita & Diener, 1997; Vittersø, 2001) have reported that associations of extraversion and well-being attenuated when adjusting for neuroticism. Three overall types of interpretations may apply to the results of this study.

Cette revue de la documentation sur l’authenticité et le bien-être au travail a pour but de définir le concept d’authenticité et de traiter de l’influence de l’authenticité sur le bien-être des travailleurs. D’abord, deux visions de l’authenticité ont été dégagées de la recension des écrits : l’authenticité interpersonnelle et l’authenticité intrapersonnelle. Ensuite, le bien-être au travail est défini, suivi de la définition du bien-être selon deux visions philosophiques : l’hédonisme et l’eudémonisme. La conception de l’authenticité constituée de dimensions cognitives et comportementales de Goldman et Kernis (2002) est présentée. Les résultats d’études empiriques établissant le lien entre l’authenticité et le bien-être sont explicités. Certaines limites et implications pour les travailleurs sont soulevées pour orienter les recherches futures.
The present literature review on authenticity and well-being at work sought to define the concept of authenticity and discuss the influence of authenticity on workers’ well-being. First, two views on authenticity are emerging from the literature review: interpersonal authenticity and intrapersonal authenticity. Second, well-being at work is defined, followed by a definition of well-being according to two philosophical views: hedonism and eudemonia. Goldman and Kernis’ model (2002), comprised of cognitive and behavioural dimensions, is presented. Some results supporting the relationship between authenticity and well-being are described. Limits and practical implications are discussed.
