The refugee crisis and peer relationships during childhood and adolescence
2021, Journal of Applied Developmental PsychologyCitation Excerpt :The new friendships may also help “return childhood to the child” by fostering play and other fun activities (UNICEF, 2009). From a less adaptive perspective, refugee children exposed to trauma often engage in repetitive play that reenacts their experiences of stress and violence (Almqvist & Brandell-Forsberg, 1997). Close dyadic relationships might intensify these signs of distress through co-rumination (Hankin, Stone, & Wright, 2010) regarding shared traumas (e.g., loss and violent victimization).
