2023, General Hospital PsychiatryA longitudinal pathway from ethnic-racial discrimination to sexual risk behaviors among Black women and Latinas: Ethnic-racial identity exploration as a protective factor
2023, Social Science and MedicineCitation Excerpt :Ensuing feelings of worthlessness and depressive mood may make Black women and Latinas more likely to engage and remain in power-imbalanced relationships with potentially violent and coercive partners (Messman-Moore and Long, 2003; Iverson et al., 2011). Research has found that women who suffer from psychological distress are at increased risk of experiencing violence (Anastario et al., 2008; Senn et al., 2010). A study among Latinx college students found that students who reported higher levels of ethnic discrimination (a stressor) were more likely to develop posttraumatic stress symptoms and unhealthy alcohol use (Cheng and Mallinckrodt, 2015).
Gendered syndemic of intimate partner violence, alcohol misuse, and HIV risk among peri-urban, heterosexual men in South Africa
2022, Social Science and MedicineCitation Excerpt :SAVA, and syndemics more broadly, have been examined among women in the U.S. (Feingold, 2009; Gonzalez-Guarda et al., 2011; Illangasekare et al., 2013; Meyer et al., 2011), with newer research using the construct to explain dynamics among women in low- and middle-income settings (Russell et al., 2013; Ulibarri et al., 2011). Others have explored SAVA among samples that include both men and women (Salas-Wright et al., 2015; Senn et al., 2010). A growing body of research has applied a syndemics lens to data from men who have sex with men (Chakrapani et al., 2019a; Safren et al., 2018; Tomori et al., 2018).
Supporting Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights Through Innovative Research Approaches
2019, Journal of Adolescent HealthAddressing Adolescents’ and Young Adults’ Substance Use Disorders
2018, Medical Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Because of the immaturity of the prefrontal cortex, youth are disproportionately vulnerable to the disinhibition effect of substances, especially in sexuality and relationships. Rates of unprotected sex, sexually transmitted infections, and relationship violence are relatively high among AYAs, but are even higher among youth who use alcohol, marijuana, or illicit substances compared with AYAs who do not.46,47 In addition, research has suggested that AYAs may experience less severe withdrawal symptoms than older adults and as a result may experience less of a deterring effect from substance use.48–50
