Management of Bipolar Disorder During the Perinatal Period
2023, Nursing for Women's HealthCitation Excerpt :The strongest predictors of associating faces of Black individuals with psychotic disorders was among study participants who were of self-reported White race and had higher levels of training. Differences in how Black patients express symptoms of emotional distress may also contribute to misdiagnosis (Bell et al., 2015). Misdiagnosis of BPD because of racism can lead to worsening perinatal outcomes.
Approaching Mental Health Equity in Neuroscience for Black Women Across the Lifespan: Biological Embedding of Racism From Black Feminist Conceptual Frameworks
2022, Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and NeuroimagingCitation Excerpt :Although the overall rates of many mental health disorders (i.e., anxiety, depression, and psychosis) are reported as lower among Black adults compared with White adults (15–18), often when Black people are assessed for mental health difficulties and/or receive care, there is a more chronic, disabling, and severe course (19). Furthermore, the historical and contemporary context of the assessment of Black people’s mental health is repeatedly linked with overpathologizing, misdiagnosis, and dismissal of valid symptom reports (20,21). Specifically, among Black women, research statistics regarding rates of many mental health difficulties are either nonexistent or still unclear.
