This dissociation was replicated in the following studies with other patients (Vallar and Baddeley, 1984; Shallice and Vallar, 1990; Martin and Breedin, 1992; Shallice and Papagno, 2019). After the publication of the Vallar and Baddeley (1984) study, the description of the patients became specifically one of a phonological WM deficit, in line with a disruption of the phonological loop component of the Baddeley model.

2021, Journal of Fluency DisordersCitation Excerpt :Specifically, participants needed to decode the image visually, access its lemma and generate a name for each image (e.g., Indefrey & Levelt, 2000), maintain and rehearse the images’ names and match whether each current image was the same as the image 1-, 2-, or 3- trials back; thus, recruiting phonological loop and central executive resources. Subvocal rehearsal was assumed to rehearse and prevent the verbal information from decay as well as to provide access of the visual-verbal information to the phonological store (e.g., Vallar & Baddeley, 1984; Vallar & Papagno, 2002). Three different N-back levels (i.e., 1-back, 2-back, 3-back) and two linguistic conditions (i.e., phonologically similar versus phonologically dissimilar items) were incorporated in the study, which allowed investigation of the impact of increasing cognitive demands on participant performance.
