Does Gingival Recession Require Surgical Treatment?
2015, Dental Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :After 5 years, only 32% of the crown margins remained below the gingival margin, suggesting that almost half of the teeth developed recession, with more attachment loss associated with subgingival restorations. Similarly, studies49,50 comparing periodontal conditions between abutment and nonabutment teeth of removable partial dentures concluded that significantly more plaque accumulation and inflammation, deeper probing depths, and more recession were associated with abutment teeth. It has been discussed in an earlier section that orthodontic treatment may present a risk factor for gingival recession, although it may affect only 10% to 20% of patients.
Association of removable partial denture use with oral and systemic health
2011, Journal of DentistryCitation Excerpt :Root caries was mainly observed and evidence for an independent, direct relationship between wearing RPDs and the prevalence of root caries is strong.33,34 Patients wearing RPDs may be particularly susceptible to root caries, even if they have reasonably good oral hygiene, and it has been reported that RPD wearers have more gingival recession and more root caries, particularly on abutment teeth, compared with controls.35,36 Regarding an impact of RPDs on other oral conditions or the oral mucosa, there are few studies published, and most have tended to focus on complete denture wearers reporting conditions such as traumatic ulceration, denture stomatitis, and burning mouth conditions.
